I.Kant

Who are those people who have chosen to travel like me? I look around while I discover the world and I see a group of men and women coming from all over the world, lost in searching, experiencing, taking pictures, telling stories.
Nomads? Maybe, for sure we are people who can’t stand still and adapt to some society’s rules that want us to wear predetermined uniforms to trade our life, our precious time in exchange for a few money. We are people who can’t be sedentary, our bodies and minds refuse the idea itself, rising up. The habit is pure curse.
Who travels doesn’t do it just to go, escape, leave everything behind. No, traveling is made to evolve yourself. Every hour, you learn something new, dealing daily with new experiences, moving further the skyline. We are charmed by every culture, every experience is plenty enjoyed in its intensity by our soul.
If I think about it, we look like animals with a backpack on our shoulders or always next to us, ready to be filled up and an imprinted smile glaring in our eyes. We are unsuited animals. It’s true. As soon as the house’s door is being closed, you enter in the club. It’s not bad actually, but I can’t deny we can’t adapt to society. On the other side, we develop a great capacity to adapt to the world, the real one, the one of nature, animals and human relationships. Magically the point of view changes and the unsuited ones for us are the others, those who can’t adapt to the sunrise and sunset, to the rhythm of seasons, to the surrounding nature.
Maybe we are crazy and so we believe the rest of the world is foolish. We have no certainties in our pockets even though many people tend to bestow us some. We have many questions in our head, maybe more than people at home. We just listen to our inner voice and speak, chat and we compare ourselves with it. We speak a lot to ourselves and the best thing is avoiding lies and filters.

We meditate. Always. While walking or sitting on a local bus or sitting on a rock, we admire the sunset. Our inner voice tells us to be free and follow our dreams. Following your dreams trying to find happiness means dealing with your fears, making some sacrifices, leaving your family, loved ones, friends, leaving people you love.
I don’t think the amount of money you travel with is important, even though most of people believe that who has chosen this life has plenty of it having left their job. It’s not true: they are life savings or past periods of hard work to earn a small bubble. A small itinerant bubble where living for real is possible.
Let’s make it clear, traveling means sacrifices and sometimes working during the trip is necessary to prolong your street life. Money is not measured by the amount of things you can buy with it but by the number of days to keep traveling. Money become the only variable to enjoy one day more in the world, in its cultures, religions, people, landscapes and works of art.

The most important teaching, coming from the street, is: the less you have the better you live. When you travel for real, you learn to live with few kilos on you back and sometimes it’s for years. Try to imagine a life without cellphones and computers, many took this choice. We can live without comforts for sure. One night you can sleep in a hostel, another one in a bungalow on the beach, another one in a dirty guesthouse, in a tent, in a hammock, on the train station ground with a step as a pillow, or again, hosted by local families, monasteries or shacks. To save money, trains, buses, vans and boats are fine. The fact is that a bed, a bathroom in the room, hot water shower become appreciated luxuries because you don’t give them for granted.
Actually, small daily inconveniences don’t ruin your day; misadventures are messages, universe’s signals to lose yourself into. On the road, traveling on busted buses, in low classes, uncomfortable seats or by hitch-hiking is painful. Transfers and itineraries are often planned but it’s so much fun to turn them upside-down and follow universal strains!
Sometime people call us brave because we travel by ourselves but, even though we are lonely most of the time, we are never really alone. Actually, being bold and dealing with our fears, without hiding ourselves behind a finger, is necessary because it’s our only resource to rely on. Is it brave? I don’t know. When this is not enough, the world comes for help. If you learn to respect people, they won’t ever leave you in a spot.
Who chose to dedicate his own life to travel, look at life in the eyes with a smile, that smile allows the maintenance of your inner light which illuminates people around you. This smile is the fruit of a research: a new sun every sunrise, a different starry sky every night, new friends in every city, humanity in little and poor things.
Lose yourself into experiences, makes us really happy.
You meet universal smiles and the language resounding in the hair is not important, people stories can be seen in their smiles. Who travels has dedicated his soul to the street. When he’s not sweeping the road, he’s working to save money for the next trip. He knows that day is coming, that thought allows him to fight the society he lives in: vital nourishment.
The traveler, the nomad, the gypsy, the adventurer is recognizable: he’s in love with people, with their stories, with encounters. He opens his own heart to perfect strangers. He’s not afraid of his neighbor, actually he’s enthralled by him, he’s aware everyone can add something to his life’s experiences.
In the old age, when he will be considered the foolish of the village, he will have stories to tell to your children and grandchildren. These stories concern wild adventures, fulfilled dreams, charming places, passionately consummated love, won fears, conquered borders, streets’ teachings and plenty lives. These journeys may inspire them to fight to defend their own dignity and freedom. It will be enough to learn to think with their own head, refusing established truths.
The journey is the truth for the traveler. That is the illuminating truth while he keeps wandering around the world. He lives the emotion of a moment aware of its caducity. This awareness allows him to fully relish and taste life. At the end, only experiences count. Every pathways, every roads he took, everyone he met, every experience he lived, are parts of him. The truth is we are open to the world; we have been seduced by it hugging its value, leaving its teaching reaching us without filters.
Journey is the metaphor of life.
You decide to leave and you travel, walk on new roads, view new places, met new people and some of them become your friends. Then here it is the end! You have to say goodbye to places and experiences. You have to say goodbye to people you shared precious moments with. Saying goodbye is hard. The good thing is that everyone takes different roads but maybe you met one another again.

Travelers have old friends all over the world.
